Shalakya tantra in ayurved refers to that branch of ayurvedic medicine that treats the diseases above the neck and shoulder. It derives its nomenclature from the Sanskirt word Shalaka that means rod or probe. In the southern part of India Shalakya Tantra is referred as Urdhwang Chikitsa. Urdhwang Chikitsa derives its nomenclature from the two words Urdhwang meaning: the body parts above the shoulder and Chikitsa meaning: treatment.
